On the Town in London, Candide in New York
Leonard Bernstein captures the stage in both London and New
York in March with productions of On the Town and Candide.
English National Opera unveils its new production of Leonard
Bernstein's classic 1944 musical On the Town on 5 March, the
first night of a 17 performance run. The staging reunites
director Jude Kelly and choreographer Stephen Mear, who created
the Olivier award-winning Singin’ in the Rain. ENO's Orchestra
and Chorus are joined by outstanding musical theatre artists
in this toe-tapping score.
Three sailors, Chip, Ozzie and Gabey, have 24 hours shore-leave
to enjoy the delights of the Big Apple, encountering the three
Manhattan girls Hildy, Claire and Ivy. On the Town captures
the vast panorama of cosmopolitan New York through the energetic
choreography and electrifying score as well as through the
characters rites of passage. Unforgettable classics such as
New York, New York add to the magic of Bernstein's musical
masterpiece.
Also running on stage in March is New York City Opera's production
of Candide in Hal Prince's staging, opening on 4 March for
14 performances. Based on Voltaire’s picaresque satire, Candide
is an evening of fast-paced drama and delectable comedy, irreverent
wit and magnificent music.
With its sparkling overture and ever-popular arias, like
Glitter and Be Gay, the score is Leonard Bernstein’s grandest
and wittiest. New York Magazine calls it "A cornucopia
of goodies, showing the full range of his talents: simple
ballads, intricate ensembles, zany operatic parodies, a Coplandesque
choral finale of heart-stopping beauty, dance sequences of
ingenious rhythmic diversity, and irresistible tunes at every
turn.

Nyman's Love Counts: stage premiere in Karlsruhe
Michael Nyman's new chamber opera, Love Counts, receives
its premiere at the Badischen Staatstheater in Karlsruhe on
12 March in a production by Robert Tannenbaum.
Scored for soprano and bass soloists with a small ensemble,
the 90-minute work is the last in a series of three operas
created by Nyman for Karlsruhe. The libretto is by Michael
Hastings and follows their highly successful collaboration
on Man and Boy: Dada which, after its German premiere last
year, has already been staged in the UK, Czech Republic and
USA.
Synopsis
Love Counts is an operatic love story between opposites, about
two people from such different worlds that they might never
have met in real life. Avril is a lecturer in mathematics
at a major college who has divorced a man who physically abused
her. Patsy, a middle-weight fighter at the end of his career,
cannot read or recognise numbers. He has had no education,
except for the boxing ring, and can barely write his name.
Avril meets Patsy when a bus driver will not stop to tell
him the bus number. She realises he has tremendous mental
limitations. And she develops a friendship with him, although
she is terrified at the idea he earns his living from hitting
men. But Patsy, beneath the muscles and the inability to talk,
is a gentle hulk who would never hurt a fly. And Avril, against
her better judgement, falls in love with him. She teaches
him basic numbers, and even helps him open a bank account.
Slowly, Patsy starts to read and add low numbers. Although
Avril still has the scars of a woman regularly beaten up by
her former husband she slowly opens her damaged heart to Patsy.
In a final series of scenes, Patsy and Avril sing out across
a large square bed all their fears and delights. A unique
understanding of their new love emerges based on trust and
surrender.
