Every now and then we will bring you a small talk interview with people from around the world in the music industry. The first interview is with Ann Dawson, the media manager of Boosey & Hawkes - the person that brings you the Cavendish Label.

Ann is currently the manager of the media department at B&H, and has worked there for almost 6 years. We were suprised to hear that before this job she was managing a gym. "It was my phase as a personal trainer and fitness instructor!" she said "And don't forget, you can't work in gym without music".

- Tell us a bit about your background.

- My background is more to do with the media industry than music I used to run a voice over agency in London…the client profile is exactly the same as for music as voice and music is usually added at the same point in a production - the end and with little thought but lots of panic!

- What does BooseyMedia offer?

- BooseyMedia offers a complete music service to the media industry and so offers not only the Cavendish catalogue but also a range of catalogues and recordings that we have access to as well as bespoke productions and music from our published catalogue.

- If you need to describe Cavendish in few sentences - what would it be?

- A catalogue with a wealth of excellent quality recordings and high production values, from original 1930's recordings to the cutting edge material we are producing today.

- What is the vision of the label?

- The label has a very strong identity driven by the Boosey name and the quality of the product - it is an eclectic mix of material covering all genres of music - and we try to balance the catalogue so that it is responding to current client and agent needs and requests…that I think is really important….but also producing real instrumental material that tends to have a longer shelf life: this includes small instrumental groups to full orchestra…

- What are you planning for us for the coming year?

- In 2005 we will be working at delivering the archive recordings from the 1940. This follows on from our release of the 1930's material this Autumn - we are very excited about it as the range is huge - military/marching band music of course but also there was some fantastic orchestral works during this decade and we have a whole range of vocal/parlour songs which are just fab! We are also planning some Blues and Kitsch early in the first half of next year…

- In the last few months you released a new series - The Archive collection. What can you tell us about it?

- Media music started at Boosey's with the scoring of music for the pit orchestras to play to silent movies and so when recording methods came along Boosey's was there - we started recording media music in 1937!
We have a pretty comprehensive archive but there are quite a few things that have gone missing, but literally by scouring the world's collections of 'mood music' collectors we have come up with copies of most things. All the recordings are restored and mastered sympathetically as we want to retain the feel and mood of the times they were recorded in.

- Last year you cancelled the old classical series and produced a new one. Why?

- We were unhappy with the quality of the sound recordings in the old series. Clients find classical music quite scary and complicated - the words (the names of the musical pieces) are hard to pronounce and the copyright issues can be complex; so with the new series we wanted to try and address some of these issues.
My team are all classical experts and we decided to develop a new series in a way that make the music as simple to use as possible and is designed as a starting point. The new recordings are excellent quality for media and the edits have been very well thought out. I think the timeline is the single most useful part of the booklet as it puts the music in its place.

- Which album from the classical series do you like the most?

- My favourite records are the Famous Bits 1+2. Clients often know the famous tune they want to use but don't know what it's called or where it appears in the piece - so we have tried to make that easy for them. There will be 2 more classical records this year to add to the series. . .

- Another special production that you have is the Editors Construction Kit.

- Yes. The idea in producing this series of CD's is to give the editor the best tools possible that will allow him to fit the music to the picture and be creative at the same time. We have tried to cover a range of ideas and also updated the drones tones and pulses (which have a relatively short life).

- Your web site is well designed.

- Thanks. This is really our brochure and it's so hard to keep it up to date and current - the main thing is that we keep it simple and clear so that our business can be understood. I hope that people in Israel use the site when they search music for their productions, It is very easy to use. Enter The Site

- I liked the Israeli commercial with the Celebrities look-alike (Yes-Oscar) and the series of "Good Life" Channel IDs- both use our music. I hope that people in Israel will continue to use our music in their productions. I wish you all in Israel peace and security. Shalom!
